The Transportation Security Administration on Wednesday announced it detected a record number of guns at airport security checkpoints last year in the Baltimore and Washington areas.

While there were fewer guns discovered by TSA agents in 2024 at Missouri airports, the number still was in the triple digits.

The rate of firearms discovered per screened passenger in Kentucky was "significantly higher" than the nationwide rate, TSA said in a release.

The TSA levied nearly $23 million in civil penalties against travelers caught with guns at security checkpoints—a new record and a 10% jump from the previous year.

Baltimore took the lead in the number of guns found, with 47 handguns caught at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), 41 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport; and 29 at Washington Dulles International Airport. Each airport set a record for most firearms detected in a single year.
