The U.K. Supreme Court ruled that a woman is someone born biologically female, excluding transgender people from the legal definition in a long-running dispute between a feminist group and the Scottish government.

LONDON -- The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that the U.K. equalities law defines a woman as someone born biologically female. Justice Patrick Hodge said five judges at the court had ruled unanimously that “the terms ‘woman’ and ‘sex’ in the Equality Act refer to a biological woman.”

Anti-trans advocacy group For Women Scotland, which counts author J.K. Rowling as a supporter, challenged a Scottish law, which led to the ruling.
