The northern lights — also called aurora borealis — could be visible in Alaska, Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Maine, northern parts of Idaho, Wyoming, Iowa, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The aurora's are back! And may be visible throughout the weekend. The University of Alaska and NOAA track auroras using the Kp-index , a global auroral activity indicator which has a scale from 0 to 9. It measures the fluctuations in the Earth's magnetic field, tied to specific geographic locations.

The northern lights can be seen most clearly at night in the dark away from the bright lights of a city, according to NOAA. The weather agency notes that moonlight can also diminish the appearance of the aurora borealis, adding that the moon doesn’t impact the actual brightness of the lights.
