Former national security adviser Mike Waltz defended his use of the messaging app Signal during a confirmation hearing Tuesday during which lawmakers largely avoided the topic.

Waltz, who was forced out as National Security Adviser over the incident, claimed that “no classified information” was divulged on the chat even though Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth disclosed key details of the military strike in real time to the group, which included Atlantic Editor Jeffrey Goldberg.

The confirmation hearing is set to drudge up the past, as Democrats prepare to pepper Waltz on the scandal that led to his removal as national security adviser.
