A major, preliminary magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck in the South Atlantic Ocean late Thursday, the United States Geological Survey reported.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Drake Passage, a body of water located between the southern tip of South America and Antarctica, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) said.
