An atomic bomb survivor from Japan has urged the abolition of nuclear arms at a high-level UN meeting, stressing that human beings cannot coexist with nuclear weapons.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would uphold the restrictions on nuclear weapons agreed under the New START Treaty with the U.S. for one year after it expires in February 2026.

Russia is offering the United States a deal that would extend by one year the last remaining nuclear arms treaty between the two countries, known as New START.

President Bola Tinubu has called for total elimination of nuclear weapons all over the world. Tinubu made the call while delivering Nigeria’s statement at the high-level meeting to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons at the UN headquarters in New York.

Nigeria will continue to do its part to ensure total elimination of nuclear weapons is achieved,” Mr Tinubu said.
