By Jeff Horwitz (Reuters) -Numerous safety features that Meta has said it has implemented to protect young users on Instagram over the years do not work well or, in some cases, don't exist, according to a report from child-safety advocacy groups that was corroborated by researchers at Northeastern University.

Makena White, the girlfriend of PGA golfer Jake Knapp who died at age 28, shared her love for Knapp in her final Instagram post before her death was announced on Friday, Sept. 26.

Instagram is expanding its use of AI to automatically place suspected teen accounts in Canada into protective settings.

Instagram also pushes its disappearing messages feature to teenagers with an animated reward as an incentive to use it. Disappearing messages can be dangerous for minors and are used for drug sales and grooming, “and leave the minor account with no recourse,” according to the report.

Instagram now has 3 billion monthly active users, according to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. This milestone comes almost four years after Instagram reportedly hit 2 billion monthly users in December 2021, catching up to other Meta platforms. Zuckerberg announced that Facebook had surpassed 3 billion users in January, followed by WhatsApp in April.
