By Jeff Horwitz (Reuters) -Numerous safety features that Meta has said it has implemented to protect young users on Instagram over the years do not work well or, in some cases, don't exist, according to a report from child-safety advocacy groups that was corroborated by researchers at Northeastern University.

Makena White, the girlfriend of PGA golfer Jake Knapp who died at age 28, shared her love for Knapp in her final Instagram post before her death was announced on Friday, Sept. 26.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Wednesday that the once-humble photo-sharing app, which he had the foresight to buy for a mere $1 billion in 2012, now has more than 3 billion active users. That's an extraordinary achievement, and not just because Instagram had barely cracked 30 million monthly active users at sale time.

Research suggests that 30 out of 47 Instagram safety tools for teens were "substantially ineffective or no longer exist".

Instagram is expanding its use of AI to automatically place suspected teen accounts in Canada into protective settings.

Instagram also pushes its disappearing messages feature to teenagers with an animated reward as an incentive to use it. Disappearing messages can be dangerous for minors and are used for drug sales and grooming, “and leave the minor account with no recourse,” according to the report.

In the coming months, Instagram is going to change that selection you see at the bottom of your app to home page, Reels, DMs, search/explore, and your own profile. Say goodbye to the dedicated posting button. You'll still be able to post on the app, of course, but you'll just have to click at the top left instead.
