Iran has detained one of Italy’s best-known journalists, Cecilia Sala, in Tehran, raising fears that Iranian authorities might be holding her as leverage in their dealings with the West—an increasingly common tactic by authoritarian regimes.

Iran confirmed on December 30th the detention of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, 29, who has been held in Tehran’s Evin Prison since December 19. Sala’s arrest came six days after she entered the country with a valid journalist visa.
